The new Salalah International Airport (مطار صلالة) was opened for flights on 15th June 2015. With the inauguration of Salalah Airport, a new chapter in the Oman’s Aviation has started. The first flight to land at this state-of-art airport was of Oman’s flagship carrier i.e. Oman Air.
The airport is a new infrastructural addition in Salalah for expanding the tourism in the city. The infrastructure development is happening for catering the increasing number of tourists in Salalah. Many hotels, roads, restaurants and beach projects are under construction and will enhance the beauty of Salalah. Some of these projects are already completed.
The new airport is massive and very attractive in comparison to the older one. Everything outside and inside is photogenic, well designed and developed wither it be parking area, lounges, boarding area, coffee shops, air bridge, eating area, duty free shops, rent a car offices or any thing else.

Salalah International Airport Transfers Options
If you are arriving at the airport, or departing, you need to arrange a transfer. There are 3 main options for the airport transfers:
- By the Public Bus Service – Mwasalat
- By the Taxi service at the Airport
- Via the premium transfers arranged by Beautiful Salalah Tours
Regarding the first option, the public bus service is run by Mwasalat and you can travel via that if you are solo traveler and your hotel is in the route of the bus. Check the route of the bus in Salalah
Regarding the second option, the airport taxi can be found outside the main building on the right side, once you come out of the arrival lounge. The taxi fares are fixed and there is a board in front of the taxi office that shows the fare. You need Omani rials in cash to pay the taxi driver. Some of the drivers may not speak English.

Arrival Lounge and Immigration
Passengers can come to the Arrival Lounge via Air Bridge. For the immigration, there will be two queues. One for the GCC Nationals (Nationals of countries in Gulf Cooperation Council) and another one for all other nationalities. The left hand side queue is for GCC Nationals while right hand side is for passengers from other countries. Don’t stand in the GCC queue is you have a different nationality, else you will be turned away. The immigration area is on 2nd floor.
After that passengers have to come down to 1st floor for luggage collection.
Buying Omani Sim Card at Salalah Airport
We highly recommend our travelers to purchase the sim card at Salalah International Airport. After the exit, passengers can find Mobile sim counters, from where they can buy sims (OMR 2 for one sim card). The document they need to show for sim purchase is the passport. You can choose the mobile carrier of Oman Tel, or Ooredoo.

Salalah Airport Departures

Departure Area
The Departure Lounge of Salalah Airport is located on the first floor. Use elevator or escalator if you are coming from the ground floor parking. If you are facing the airport building, the departure lounge is on the right side and arrival lounge is on the left side.
There is also a vehicle bridge that takes the departing passengers to the drop off area right in front of Departure Lounge. The car can be parked in front of Departure lounge for free for the first 15 minutes. This is to facilitate the drop off for the passengers. From 16th minute, OMR 1 will be charged for that parking.

Salalah Airport’s Departure Lounge is big and have airlines counters on right and left side. The right side is reserved for Oman air, while the counter of Qatar Airways and other airlines on the left side. Both domestic and international flights boarding passes are issued from these counters.
Porter service is available and the charges are very nominal. There is no fixed charges for porter service and depends on the individual porter. You can pay him anything from 500 baisas to 1 rial Omani. The luggage wrapping facility is also available at OMR 2 for one bag. For passengers who need wheel chair assistance can get the wheel chair from the airline counter.
On the center of the lounge, coconut trees are featured, which are giving localized touch of Salalah. Salalah beaches have coconut trees on the white sand and within the city also you will find such trees in abundance.
Immigration Counter in Departure Lounge is easily accessible. One officer is sitting on the entrance of the immigration area, where he will see whether you are travelling internally or domestic. The domestic passengers are asked to passed from the right side, where the passports are not required if you have Oman Resident Card. If you are travelling domestic but don’t have Oman Resident Card, then passport is required. The international passengers are asked to pass from the left side, where the immigration officer will stamp the passport with exit.
Before the immigration counter, a screen can guide you about the departure time, departure status and the boarding gate details. Don’t worry if you didn’t look at this one, as you will find couple of these after the immigration counter and before the boarding lounges.
Duty Free Shopping
Salalah Airport has good Duty Free Shop, which has many variety to choose from. Most of the souvenirs sold here are made in Turkey, so you can take souvenirs of Turkey without going there. Unfortunately local Salalah souvenirs are not available.
Departure Lounges
There are many boarding lounges in the Airport. After passing from the immigration counter, the walkway has lounges on both sides. Check for your boarding lounge and head towards it. Before heading towards there, you can stop for praying at the prayer area, or shopping at Duty Free.
There are air bridges that connect the lounges with the planes. So boarding is easy and will not take much time.
Each boarding lounge has a washroom of its own.
There are premium lounges also to go instead of regular boarding lounge. The details about these premium lounges is as follows:
Airport Lounges (Al Khareef Lounge and Plaza Premium Lounge)
Like any other airport, there are airport lounges also for selected passengers. These airport lounges offer more comfortable seating, quieter environments, and buffet dining.
